This course is aimed to help students to have a basic knowledge and understanding about translation of Japanese in terms of Japanese linguistics and history of Japanese.



This course has 3 parts.
Part 1: Translation between Japanese and English
Part 2: Translation between past Japanese and present Japanese
Part 3 : History of translation in Japan

CATS Requirements: Non-native speakers of Japanese with a comprehension level of JLPT2 or higher.

This class is conducted in Japanese.

[JDTS/MATS students] This course can be taken as reduced seminar (4 ECTS) only.


Course Goals

The goals of this course are to have a basic knowledge and understanding of:
(1) what linguistic aspects affect translation between Japanese and other languages (especially English).
(2) what linguistic aspects affect translation between past and present Japaneses.
(3) history of translation in Japan.
