Contemporary Japanese Philosophy in a Global Context

This course explores various aspects of contemporary Japanese philosophy (Post-World War II Japanese philosophy) by reading primary sources in English translation and discussing them in English.




Participants will read and discuss the following papers:

  • OMORI Shozo (大森荘蔵) “An Essay on Kotodama (ことだま論)”
  • KIMURA Bin (木村敏) “Time as the Between (あいだとしての時間)”
  • SAKABE Megumi (坂部恵) “Appearance and Copula (あらわれとCopula)”
  • HIROMATSU Wataru (廣松渉) “Articulation Forms of the World of Things (事物的世界の分節相)”
    Participants will initially receive a lecture on the background knowledge necessary to understand the texts.
    They will then read and discuss the papers, deepening their understanding of the philosophical ideas presented by these authors.

Active participation in discussion 40%
Term paper 60%
